Free Compost Available To Colma Cemeteries, Nurseries And Businesses
Limited quantities of compost available on annual basis
Each year a limited quantity of high-quality compost is available to Colma cemeteries, nurseries, and businesses at no charge. Compost helps build healthy soil, reduces need for irrigation, and eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers. The free compost is delivered from Colma’s recycling and garbage hauler, Republic Services. If you’d like more information on compost delivery, contact Sarah Prescott at Republic Services SPrescott@republicservices.com 415-279-8348
Please note the minimum quantity of compost delivered is 20 cubic yards. Town staff and Republic will coordinate a convenient date, time, and delivery location details.
This free compost program is made available through the Town of Colma and Republic Services partnership and is similar to the annual free compost giveaway events for Colma residents. These initiatives are designed to help the Town of Colma comply with the state mandate, SB 1383, which requires all jurisdictions to divert organic materials, such as food waste and yard waste, away from landfills. By diverting organics from the landfill, Colma is actively reducing greenhouse gas emissions, because organic materials in landfills produce a potent greenhouse gas known as methane, which has 88 times more global warming potential than carbon dioxide. Additionally, SB 1383 requires all jurisdictions to procure organic materials, such as compost or mulch, to support and increase the market for organic waste products such as compost and mulch.
