City Manager’s Update
Daniel Barros, City Manager
At last month’s September 11th City Council meeting, the City Council awarded over $145,000 in grants to twenty-three San Mateo County non-profit organizations that serve our community. This continues to be an annual program that the Town has participated in for some time in effort to make sure our community has access to programs and services that the Town could not sustain independently. The range of organizations funded cover food relief programs, youth and senior services, groups that advocate for underserved populations or protect the environment, and medical services. If you are in need of programs and services similar to these, please contact Town Hall at 650-997-8300 and we can connect you with one of these non-profit organizations.
As we turn the page to October, the Town is in for a yet another fun and festive month ahead. We have a lot of great recreational activities and events planned this month with something for everyone. We are kicking the month off (pun intended) with Family Kickball on October 5th at Sterling Park. Also, don’t forget about the Cinema at the Cemetery on October 12th hosted at the Italian Cemetery. In keeping with the spirit of Halloween, we have other fun activities as well like a Pumpkin Carving Party and Parent and Me Pumpkin Decorating. All of these wonderful events will be capped off by our annual Trunk-or-Treat event on October 25th at the Colma Community Center. Please make sure to register in advance for these events. For more information, please visit the events page on the Town’s website or contact the Recreation Services Department at 650-985-5678.
Halloween, October 31st, falls on a Thursday this year. The Colma Police Department and Colma Fire Protection District will be in the Sterling Park neighborhood on Halloween for Colma’s annual Trick-or- Treating. Make sure to load up on goodies for the kids this year. May you all have a wonderful, happy, and safe Halloween!
Halloween Safety Tips
John Munsey, Chief of Police
It’s almost time for the little ghosts and goblins to come out in search of treats. We want everyone to have a safe and Happy Halloween! Please take a minute to review the following safety tips to ensure you and your family stay safe while trick-or-treating.
- If you plan to drive during trick-or-treat hours, drive slowly and watch for children. Be sure to enter and exit driveways carefully.
- Make sure costumes and candy bags or pails are reflective. Costumes shouldn’t drag too far on the ground to avoid tripping. Masks, hats, and shoes should be well-fitting. Carry flashlights or glow sticks for extra visibility.
- Children under 12 should go trick-or-treating with a trusted adult. Older children should go in groups and say together.
- Report suspicious activity and emergencies. Call 9-1-1 immediately!
- Avoid candy that has loose wrappings, is completely unwrapped, has puncture holes, or is homemade and not factory-wrapped. Small children should not be allowed hard candy, which could be a choking hazard.
Be safe and have fun!
