The El Camino Real Bicycle and Pedestrian Improvement Project

Project Description
The El Camino Real ((State Route 82, “ECR”) Bicycle and Pedestrian Project implements Complete and Green Street improvements from Albert M Teglia Blvd in Colma to Hickey Boulevard in the City of South San Francisco. The purpose of this Project is to improve multi-modal infrastructure, traffic operations, accessibility, and safety along the El Camino Real and meet future housing needs and demands. The project area is divided into three segments; Segment (A) from Albert M. Teglia Boulevard to Mission Road in the Town, Segment (B) from Mission Road to Arlington Drive in the Town, and Segment (C) from Arlington Drive to Hickey Boulevard in the City of South San Francisco.
The proposed improvements along ECR corridor include sidewalks, protected bike lanes, ADA curb ramps, high-visibility crosswalks, street lighting, landscaping, stormwater treatment measures, bus stop improvements, reconfiguration of ECR/Mission Road intersection, installation of traffic signals at ECR/Mission and ECR/Collins intersections.
Current Status
The Town has completed the Project Study Report-Project Development Support (PSR-PDS), which serves as the Project Initiation Document (PID) for the El Camino Real Project. The PID is a formal document that defines the scope, purpose, and need for a transportation project. With Caltrans’ approval of the PSR-PDS, the Project has moved the into the Project Approval and Environmental Document (PA&ED) phase, which is funded through a Measure W grant from the San Mateo County Transportation Authority (SMCTA). This phase involves completing environmental assessments and obtaining the necessary approvals to move forward. It includes environmental review (CEQA/NEPA), public involvement, and selecting the preferred alternative. The goal is to secure approval for the project to proceed to design and construction phases. The project team is currently working on developing and analyzing various alternatives.
